چکیده

This paper investigates whether government support can act to increase exporting activity. We use a uniquely rich data set on Irish manufacturing plants and employ an empirical strategy that combines a non-parametric matching procedure with a difference-in-differences estimator in order to deal with the potential selection problem inherent in the analysis. Our results suggest that if grants are large enough they can encourage already exporting firms to compete more effectively on the international market. However, there is little evidence that grants encourage non-exporters to start exporting. JEL classification: L2, H2, F2, O3

Globalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2007 / 18 R & D and exporting : A comparison of British and Irish firms

This paper investigates the two way relationship between R&D and export activity. In particular, we concern ourselves with the question whether R&D stimulates exports and, perhaps more importantly, whether export activity leads to increasing innovative activity in terms of R&D (learning by exporting). We use two unique firm level databases for Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland and compa...

Globalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2004 / 33 Industry Differences in the Effect of Export Market Entry : Learning by Exporting ?

There is extensive empirical evidence pointing to the existence of sunk costs to exporting. Only higher productivity firms can profitably cover these and enter export markets. This is the standard explanation for the regularity with which econometric analyses reports that exporters are more productive than non-exporters. But what happens to their productivity trajectory once they have entered? ...

Globalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2005 / 04 Knowledge accumulation and productivity : Evidence from plant level data for Ireland

This paper investigates whether knowledge accumulating activities, such as exporting, R&D, or worker training, can enhance plants’ productivity. To this end we use plant level panel data for Irish manufacturing. Our results importantly indicate that productivity enhancing effects of these factors are found only for domestic firms, but not for foreign multinationals located in Ireland. We postul...

Globalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2004 / 08 Outsourcing , foreign ownership , exporting and productivity : An empirical investigation with plant level data

We investigate the impact of international outsourcing on productivity using plant level data for Irish manufacturing. Specifically, we distinguish the effect of outsourcing of materials from services inputs. Moreover, we examine whether the impact on productivity is different for plants being more embedded in international markets through exporting or being part of a multinational. Our results...

Globalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2005 / 44 Demonstration or Congestion ? Export Spillovers in Sweden

A key feature of the Swedish economy over last decade and a half has been the rapid internationalisation of its economy, both through FDI and trade. In this paper we consider the relationship between these two trends: whether the effect of increased inward FDI on exports by domestic firms may be positive or negative. The first case may occur as a result of demonstration effects. The second may ...
